WolfTech supports the computer needs of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the largest department on campus. We welcome applications for internships from all degree programs. Very little computer experience is required to start as long as you're not afraid of computers and are willing to learn.
Each semester, WolfTech looks for interns, and provides education and experience in the following topics:
- Software Installation
- Systems Upgrades / Patches
- Network Cabling
- Hardware Installation / Maintenance
- Basic Troubleshooting
- Technical Writing
- Email Client Configuration
- Customer Support
- AFS Client Installation and Configuration
Or, you can join our WebTeam division to learn:
- Technical Writing
- Code Scripting (PHP and JavaScript)
- Digital Photography
- MySQL Databases
- Information Research
- Webpage Design
- Interviewing / Reporting
- Editing (written, graphic and multimedia)
Internships pay $7 to $8 per hour. Positions are usually for the Fall or Spring semester, though summer internships are a possibility. All positions require a Work-Study appointment from Financial Aid. More information: http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/workstudy_jobs/workstudy_info.htm.
All positions are on Centennial Campus, and the highly motivated successful interns have a chance at higher paid Assistant System Administrator or Assistant Webmaster positions after their second semester internship. Applications are accepted year-round.
Intern positions can range in scope and technical ability. Sample positions include:
- Computer Support Assistant
- Duties include equipment moving, updating records, research, computer setup and installation, and minor hardware/software repairs and updates. Applicants must have a general knowledge of computer hardware and software and be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Computer Support Technician
- Position will share several duties with Computer Support Assistant position, but often on a more advanced level. Applicants must have an intermediate knowledge of computer hardware and software, and at least a general familiarity with internet search engines and computer support sites.
- Computer Lab Assistant
- Duties include maintaining appearance of computer labs, creating documentation, providing customer support, installing PCs, networking, and software installation. Applicants must have an intermediate knowledge of computers and be able to lift 50 lbs. Advanced computing skills are a plus.
- Assistant Systems Analyst
- Duties include working with systems staff to develop and maintain the departmental computing infrastructure. No previous work experience is required, however, applicants must have a strong knowledge and love of computers. Previous knowledge of Active Directory, Windows 2003 Server, Linux, Unix, MacOS, PHP/MySQL, .NET, and/or InstallShield AdminStudio are a plus.
- WebTeam Scripter
- Assist the Electrical and Computer Engineering webmaster in the creation of tools for the World Wide Web. Applicants should be able to layout web pages using a text editor or Dreamweaver, and be willing to learn PHP scripting language. Ability to manipulate graphics using Fireworks or Photoshop a plus.
