The Basics
Basic usage of Adobe Premiere Pro for ECE
Importing Videos and Images
In the Project pane (generally the top left), right-click and select "Import...". Choose the file(s) you'd like to work with. In the right part of the bar at the bottom of the window, you will see the file's import progress.
Creating Title Elements
Right-click in the Sequence pane, select New Item>Title
Choose the same timebase (23.976fps) and width (1920x1080) as the video you want to put the title one. Choose Square Pixels (1.0). The title editor is similar to a very simplified Photoshop.
Editing
Right-click in the Project pane and select New Item > Sequence...
From the sequence presets, select HDV > HDV1080p24
Double-click on it to make the Sequence pane open it. This is basically the timeline of the final product movie.
There are several Video and Audio rows. If the eye/speaker is on on the row, it means that row is activated and will be represented in the final movie. Any activated audio rows will play at the same time and video rows will overlay one another based on their order (Video 3 will be on top of Video 2, and so on).
Benefits of these rows: If you want to temporarily remove something, you can put it on a row that's not activated to get it out of the final video. Having one of the higher videos fade out creates the effect of one video fading into another.
Cropping an Element
Double-click an element in the Project pane to open it in the Source pane (top middle). To choose the portion of the video you'd like to use, use the "Set In Point" and "Set Out Point" markers (top left side of the controls under the source). The In Point is where the video starts and the Out Point is where the video ends.
Adding Videos/Images to the Sequence
Click and drag the element you wish to add to the sequence FROM the Source pane after you are done cropping it. Elements snap to other elements in the sequence.
Adding Effects on an Element
Double-click on the element you want to edit in the Sequence pane. Click on the Effects Controls tab at the top of the Source pane to add effects.
Generally, all we use is the opacity effect. For example, lets fade something in at the beginning and out at the end. First, we set a keyframe at the beginning of the element for 0% opacity, then a few seconds in set one for 100% opacity. What this does is create a fade effect over those few seconds. To fade out, do the reverse - set a keyframe at the end to 0% opacity and a keyframe a few seconds before to 100% opacity.
Effects work on video and audio. If you want a fade in/out effect on audio, you would do the above for the Level effect, under Audio Effects. Go from 0dB to a very negative dB for fading out and the reverse for fading in.
Exporting the final product
File > Export > Media...
Format: MPEG2 Preset: HDTV 1080p 24 High Quality
Select "Queue" to queue the project up in the encoder to process in the background, or select "Export" to do one at a time. (Queue is preferred)
Hints and Tips
- The slide at the bottom of the Effects pane and the Sequence pane, going from small triangles to large triangles, adjusts the time scale, making it easier to work with very long and very short elements
