Recovering Lost Emails

If you're working off a server, this usually isn't a big deal. If you are on a server, this could become complicated due to circumstances outside the user's control. This process is not going to work 100% of the time either.

  1. Go to the Start menu and open up My Computer
  2. Open up the C: drive
  3. Open the Program Files folder
  4. Open the Common Files folder
  5. Open the System folder
  6. Open the MSMAPI or Mapi folder (you will have one or the other, just open the one you have)
  7. Open the 1033 folder
  8. Run the scanpst.exe file.
  9. Put in the file name you are trying to recover or use the Browse... tool to search for it
    • NOTE: MAKE SURE TO TELL IT TO CREATE A BACK UP OF THE FILE YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE!
  10. If the Inbox Repair Tool find and recovers something, it will also create a Personal Folders file (.pst)
  11. Open Outlook Express
  12. Make sure to be under the profile that contains the Personal Folders file you tried to repair
  13. Go to the View menu
  14. Click Folder List to turn on the Folder List view
  15. Look for the Lost and Found folder and open it
  16. If the file you tried to recover isn't there, you won't be able to get it back

Getting Recovered Items Back

  3. Click Add to open the New Outlook Data File dialog box
  4. In the Types of storage box, click to select Personal Folders File (.pst), and then click OK
  5. In the Create or Open Outlook Data File dialog box, click a directory and a file name for your new Personal Folders (.pst) file, and then click Open
  6. Click OK
  7. Drag the files from the old Personal Folders file into the new one
