User:Rewood/How to access your computer files from home
If you need access to your files from a remote location such as another computer or your house here are a few steps you can take to make this possible...
First you need to share any folders which contains files that you might wish to have access to. You can do this by doing the following:
Find the folder you wish to share and right click on it then select sharing.
Now click on the Share This Folder button and hit Apply.
Repeat these two steps for any other folders you wish to share.
In order to access these files you need to be on a Windows 2000 or XP machine.
Simply goto Start... Run... and type in and then either the ip or the full computer name (and domain, such as blah.ecew2k.ncsu.edu) preceded by double backslashes. i.e. \\blah.ecew2k.ncsu.edu
You will be asked to enter your username and password in order to get in.
- Tech note*
If you have administrative rights on the local machine you can access any hard drive on your computer as well without having to share each individual folder.
You can do this by simply by going to Start... Run... and type in the full ip or the full computer name such as \\blah.ecew2k.ncsu.edu\c$. This will allow you to access your entire C drive. Any drive letter can be substituted such as D or E if you have more Hard Drives. This, however, does not work for CD-Rom drives or Zip Disks. Remember, this will only work if you have administrative rights on the local machine.
